Martinez Ranch Entrance
By Kimberly Wiebelt
“I’m going to New Mexico!
I’m going to New Mexico!” I sang
and danced up and down the
hallways of my school in Crescent,
Oklahoma. My excitement had been
overflowing that whole day of
August 18th. This was the day that I
was going to leave for my
Pronghorn Antelope hunt at the
Martinez Ranch in New Mexico
with my dad. I could hardly contain
my excitement throughout the day.
Once the final bell rang at school, I
eagerly dashed out of my classroom
and began singing the familiar tune
while passing by my principal; who
laughed and said “have fun on that
trip!” “Oh, I will!” I replied happily as I skipped out of the hallway and out to the parking lot to my car. I got
home as fast I possibly could, for my dad had told me that we were leaving the second we were ready. I was
already packed and ready to go; the guns, ammunition, equipment, and camping supplies were already tucked
neatly inside of my dad’s truck. I rushed into my room and grabbed the last few things I needed for the trip,
taking only a few moments to plug my laptop into its charger and then bolting back out the door; ready and
excited to go.
We left the house around 4:15 P.M., which was actually earlier than we had anticipated. We began our
journey to New Mexico by heading north to get to the flatlands of the Oklahoma Panhandle. We listened to our
favorite music and discussed the adventure awaiting us on the prairies of New Mexico. We were both equally
excited about the hunt, I remember my dad looking towards me in the passenger seat and saying, “This is
payback for a bummer summer.” I nodded my head in agreement. I remembered my long and drudging summer
all too well. It was a miracle that I was there on the way to this hunt. My mind gave me a flashback to Friday,
June 19th.
