Greater, Lesser, and "Mini" Cranes

Winter Crane Hunt

Quoting a hunting buddy of mine, “Never let the weatherman stop you from hunting. Let the weather stop you”. That became our mantra as we headed into the largest storm to hit the Texas Panhandle in years. We met our guide, Mark Meisenburg, owner of “Panhandles Best” on Friday morning, just hours before the storm was to hit. And although we were snowed out on Saturday, we were able to experience some of the best wing shooting you will find anywhere on Friday and Sunday.

Our guide, also a taxidermist, has a unique approach to hunting these extremely wary birds. He uses real mounted birds for his decoys, coupled with first rate portable blinds, making for an extremely effective setup. And not only are these birds considered some of the best table fare of any waterfowl, you can take a take along your .410 or 20 gauge for some real sport. Yes, Mark can get ‘em that close!
